Dementia - Not Easy to Explain

Interesting evening at my house yesterday. My mother has dementia and she went off the deep end around 4:30 yesterday. Saint Gene said it was like turning off a light switch, almost instant. Very hostile. When I got home Saint Gene had mistreated her something awful, nobody would let her get up and go to the ball game, if I didn't get her out of that chair and to the church she would never forgive me, don't ever speak to me again, all you do is lie and I never thought I would see the day when I couldn't trust my own children, etc., etc., etc. A lot of this at full volume. I got her to take one of her anti-psychotic pills and she calmed down some, still angry and hostile but not trying to get out of the chair, etc. Around 7:30 I managed to get her to take her regular nighttime meds and included another of the anti-psychotic pills. "Dancing With the Stars" came on and my mother's sitting there gloomy, glowering if I talk to her and then, out of the clear blue sky, "What is that dancer's name? She's really good isn't she." All with a big smile on her face. The light switch had come back on. She went to bed at nine and slept all night (for a change).

When I walked by her bedroom this morning I heard, "Are you feeling better this morning?" I said yes, I was, and asked how she was feeling. "Feeling pretty good". Said she was ready to get up so Saint Gene came up to the bedroom to get her up. "You ready to get up, Mama J?" "Yes, but I can't right now. I have an arm full of fish."

I left to go to work.

Sometimes you just have to see some humor in the situation. Once my mother put her beta fish in the refrigerator.
