Serenity

Serenity

What is there about a scene like this that makes it feel so serene and peaceful? It can't be that it's totally about nature. There's nothing "nature" about fencing and hay rolls, both are man-made objects. And yet looking at this scene does help make me feel quieter and easier. And being there and taking this picture was a quiet yet exciting experience. It was taken during the same trip to Asheville that I mentioned in the previous post. I left early in the day so that I could take my time and stop whenever I wanted to take pictures. I decided to exit off the interstate to a little town that has been around for a long time. Surely there would be something interesting in the small town square or it's downtown area. Wrong. Just a little run-down town that had seen better days and wasn't decaying very gracefully and whose main businesses were McDonald's and Wendy's. But on the way back to the interstate I saw two silos off to my right and decided to turn down the road that seemed to go past them. In a very short distance the road turned into a dirt road with a "dead end" sign. And that's when I started having a good time. There was a lot of open land with hay rolls strewn all across the landscape. There were even small mountains in the background (though none are seen in the background of this photo). I was there for an hour and a half, traipsing all over this field, camera in hand. I didn't see a single other person the entire time. And I found out that dead end roads can go a long, long way before they dead end!

You know I love a hay field. This is something so peaceful about those big old bales after a cutting. I never thought about why those fields look peaceful. Maybe it's one of the verses in the 23rd Psalm - He MAKES ME lie down in green pastures....He restores my soul.
